Arya Samaj marriage is performed as per Vedic traditions. The marriage under the Arya Samaj is legally valid as per the Arya Samaj Marriage Validation Act, 1937 read with the provisions of Hindu Marriage Act, 1955. The rituals for wedding in Arya Samaj are quite simple. Like regular Hindu weddings, their weddings are centred around a fire, where the hymns recited are explained to the wedding couple.
The eligible criteria for an Arya Samaj marriage is the girl (bride) should be 18 years old or more the Boy (groom) must be 21 years old or more. The wedding couple should belong to Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism or Jainism religion to be eligible for Arya Samaj marriage.
As the Arya Samaj wedding is for the persons who follow Hinduism, Bhudhism ,Sikhism or Jainism only ,the persons belonging to other religions can be a part of Arya Samaj wedding only if they wilfully adopt any of these four religions The Arya Samaj has always been supportive of inter-religious and inter-caste marriages. Primarily you require 2 passport size photos of each Boy and Girl .Photo identity card of both boy and girl, two witnesses whose age should be more than 18 years with their identity card .
The wedding ceremony will commence with the Pandit reciting and explaining to you the holy Vedic hymns .This is followed by the jai mala ceremony where the couple exchanges garlands. Then the bride has to wash the groom’s feet, hand and face, after which the groom eats honey, curd and ghee.
Thereafter the Yagna begins and the couple takes rounds around the holy fire.
The Kanyadaan ritual takes place, followed by the Pratigya Mantra, during which the couple hold each other’s hand and take wedding vows. While the groom recites mantras during Shilarohan, the brother of the bride has to place her foot on a stone, after which the couple performs the Parikrama around the fire 4 times. Just like the 7 vows of Hindu marriage, Arya Samaj marriage observes the Saptapadi around the fire.
An Arya Samaj marriage is conducted at a sub-divisional magistrate. In some jurisdictions, like Delhi, there is an option of online registration of marriage. You will get an appointment date that’s generally set 15 days later. One needs to fill up the formalities of the form, providing documents regarding your date of birth, like birth certificate, 2 passport size photographs and a wedding photograph.
If you want, you can opt to provide your wedding invitation card, as it’s an optional requirement. The documents should be attested by a gazetted officer and then after the submission, the district court will provide you with a certificate.
